For the University of Technology and Arts, the topic of crisis, management and response capacity forms part of a broader reflection on how to prepare for action in a reality that increasingly rarely offers the comfort of order and predictability.<br \/>\nAs noted by Piotr Wilczek, Rector of the University and former Polish Ambassador to the United States and the United Kingdom:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCybersecurity has become a central element of almost every major crisis, regardless of whether it concerns a company, a public institution or a diplomatic mission. Today, cyber threats are among the most effective tools of influence, destabilisation and building advantage. Organisations that emerge stronger from crises build system redundancy, a culture of openly reporting incidents and secure communication channels. The ability to respond to crises has become an integral part of strategic risk management and ensuring the continuity of every organisation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This message resonated strongly during<strong> the event \u201cWhen Everything Falls Apart: What Connects Crises in Companies and Institutions?\u201d, organised by the Polish Information Processing Society with expert support from Women Go Cyber.<\/strong><br \/>\nThree different organisational experiences: e-commerce, a public institution and a large energy group<br \/>\n<strong>Three different perspectives: Joanna Jakubowska from Allegro, Agnieszka Gaw\u0119cka-Kopytko from TAURON Group and Ma\u0142gorzata Przewalska from the Public Procurement Office<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>One shared pattern of action<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An efficient crisis response and effective prevention are, above all, the result of continuous learning and training \u2014 constant practice, preparation and cooperation. The quality of action during an incident is determined not so much by tools, but by a clear division of roles, efficient communication, readiness to make decisions under pressure and the organisation\u2019s ability to maintain business continuity. Although Allegro, the Public Procurement Office and TAURON represent significantly different environments, their experiences led to a very similar conclusion.<br \/>\n<em>What matters most?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Details \u2014 often unspectacular, yet absolutely crucial. A regularly updated contact list. A designated communication channel in the event of an incident. Ready-made message templates. Continuous training and scenario exercises. And finally, the ability to operate a satellite phone, which is closer to an early Nokia or Ericsson than to a modern iPhone \u2014 meaning that, without prior preparation, very few people will be able to use it intuitively in a moment of real pressure.<\/p>\n<p><em>The workroom needs to be fed<\/em><br \/>\nOrganisational resilience does not emerge at the moment of an incident. It is built earlier \u2014 through scenario exercises, agreeing on roles, updating contacts and preparing people to act under pressure.<br \/>\nAnd in the workroom, technical competencies alone are not enough, because a crisis very quickly stops being merely an infrastructure problem. It involves internal and external communication, resource allocation, maintaining continuity, managing emotions and preventing a temporary situation from turning into a lasting crisis.<br \/>\nIn the case of public institutions, there is one additional dimension: a high level of information transparency, which increases exposure to pressure, interpretation and the need for exceptionally careful communication.<\/p>\n<p><em>Debriefing and space for a culture of error<\/em><br \/>\nEqually important is what happens after the incident itself: what worked, what failed and what can be done better next time. This is where organisational learning begins \u2014 and with it, space for a culture of error, without which resilience is not built, but weaknesses are simply repeated.<\/p>\n<p><em>Women Go Cyber<\/em><br \/>\nAnother interesting thread also emerged in the background of the entire meeting. The fact that all three speakers are connected with Women Go Cyber, and that the event was opened by Maria Ganzha, a woman leading the Polish Information Processing Society, should be read more broadly than merely in terms of representation.<br \/>\nIt is a clear signal that cybersecurity and crisis management are shifting from a narrowly understood area of technical expertise into the sphere of leadership, communication, organisational resilience and managing complexity. The perspective of women brings a new dimension that goes far beyond the standard discussion of crisis and security. It takes into account not only hard data, but also highlights the importance of cooperation, soft skills and inclusivity in effective crisis prevention and management. This was also strongly emphasised by Agnieszka Wiel\u0105dek in the context of the goals and mission of Women Go Cyber.<\/p>\n<p><em>Resilience as a competence of the future<\/em><br \/>\nThe event took place in an academic environment, so it is difficult not to ask whether building organisational resilience is becoming a separate competence \u2014 one that should be taught not only to security specialists, but more broadly: to managers, employees and students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What role can higher education play in this process?<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom the perspective of the labour market, this question is particularly relevant today. The World Economic Forum identifies resilience, flexibility and agility as among the fastest-growing competencies, whose importance will continue to increase by 2030. That is why this topic resonated so strongly within the walls of the University: the conversation about crisis also turned out to be a conversation about the competencies that the world of work already needs today.<br \/>\nWe would like to sincerely thank the speakers and participants for an intense and substantive discussion, their curiosity, openness and conversations that continued long after the panel had ended. For the University, this is an important signal that the topic inspires reflection and encourages further exchange of experience.
